Human Resources Assistant – Municipality

We are seeking a detail-oriented and customer-focused Human Resources Assistant to support a wide range of administrative, technical, and benefits-related functions for our municipal Human Resources Department. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys variety in their day, thrives in a team setting, and values work that directly supports employees, retirees, and the public.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide exceptional customer service to employees, retirees, beneficiaries, applicants, and the public
  • Maintain HR records, HRIS data, and employee files in compliance with retention laws
  • Assist with payroll entries, personnel changes, and timekeeping processes
  • Support benefits administration for medical, dental, life insurance, COBRA, and other plans, including enrollments, terminations, and dependent changes
  • Coordinate with vendors and departments to resolve benefit issues and maintain accurate records
  • Help manage FMLA, workers’ compensation, and injury-on-duty programs
  • Assist in administering public safety retirement benefits, pension adjustments, and disability retirement processes
  • Participate in recruitment, onboarding, and promotional processes for municipal positions
  • Track performance reviews, probationary periods, and employee evaluations
  • Prepare documentation for verifications, reporting requirements, and public records requests
  • Perform a variety of clerical and administrative support tasks, including ordering supplies and preparing correspondence

What We’re Looking For

  • Education: Associate’s degree with at least 2 years of HR experience, or a Bachelor’s degree in HR or related field preferred
  • Experience: Public sector or unionized environment a plus
  • Skills:
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to handle confidential information with integrity
  • Bilingual skills are a plus
  • Certifications: PHR or SHRM-CP a plus
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and pass a background check

You’ll work in a professional office setting, supporting employees and leadership across the organization. This position involves regular computer use, phone interactions, and collaboration with both internal departments and the public.
