This AI Engineering internship is a research-focused role centered on exploring how unstructured natural language statements can be transformed into quantitative signals with associated uncertainty. The AI Engineering intern will investigate and prototype machine learning approaches, primarily using transformer-based architectures, that combine textual inputs with structured numerical context to model how beliefs or statements influence measurable outcomes. The work is exploratory and research-driven, with an emphasis on designing experiments, constructing training data, and iterating on model architectures. The expected outcome of the internship is a working proof-of-concept model, a supporting dataset, and a written research paper suitable for publication.
What qualifications you will need:
- Bachelors Degree - Required
- Currently completing or recently completed a Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field – Preferred
- Prior research experience such as a thesis, lab work, or independent research projects - Preferred
- Strong ML & Deep Learning Foundations - Required
- Solid understanding of modern deep learning architectures, especially transformer-based models – Required
- Hands-on experience training neural networks using PyTorch or JAX - Required
- Familiarity with embeddings, attention mechanisms, loss functions, and optimization techniques - Required
- Experience modifying standard architectures, including custom heads and non-standard outputs - Required
Other Knowledge/Experience:
- Natural Language Processing (NLP) Experience Beyond Simple Classification
- Experience working with unstructured natural language inputs
- Familiarity with semantic representations and embedding models
- Understanding of how language models encode beliefs, uncertainty, and intent
- Comfort handling hybrid inputs that combine text with numeric or contextual features
Probabilistic and Quantitative Modeling
- Understanding of probability distributions, uncertainty estimation, and confidence intervals
- Experience modeling outputs as distributions rather than point estimates
- Familiarity with Bayesian concepts or probabilistic machine learning
- Ability to reason about priors, posteriors, and belief updates
Dataset Construction and Labeling Strategy
- Demonstrated experience creating training datasets rather than only consuming existing ones
- Ability to reason about ground truth definition, noise, bias, and confounding variables
- Comfort sourcing data from multiple sources, including public datasets and APIs
- Experience designing datasets that reflect causal or belief-driven relationships
Research-Oriented Problem Solving
- Ability to turn open-ended research problems into testable hypotheses
- Experience reading and implementing ideas from academic papers
- Comfort running experiments, analyzing results, and iterating independently
- Strong intuition for identifying spurious results, data leakage, or artifacts

- Comfortable making architectural and experimental decisions
- Able to self-direct exploration and identify next steps

Work Location/Schedule:
- The position is open to remote work but prefers candidates located in Orlando for hybrid arrangements
Internship Duration and Hours:
- 3 months, with potential to extend to 6 months
- 40 hours/week, M-F; 8am – 5pm
